CONCORD - Today, the Senate ED&A Committee voted Ought to Pass on SB 161 as amended in a vote of 3-2. The bill as amended, prohibits the state from charging interest on non-fraud overpayments for unemployment benefits.
Senator Becky Whitley (D-Hopkinton) issued the following statement in response:
“New Hampshire is only 1 of 15 states that applies interest on overpayments, which is overly punitive, particularly during the pandemic and economic crisis. The last thing families need while desperately trying to keep the lights on and food on the table is to be financially penalized for mistakes that were made outside of their control. I am proud to stand up for working Granite Staters and look forward to bringing this bill before the full Senate.”
