CONCORD – Today, Senator Perkins Kwoka introduced SB 216 to the Senate Commerce Committee. SB 216 seeks to establish a commission to study the ongoing landlord and tenant mediation program in the circuit courts. After the hearing, the Senate Commerce Committee voted unanimously to adopt the legislation. Prime sponsor Senator Rebecca Perkins Kwoka (D-Portsmouth) issued the following statement after the hearing:
“I want to thank the Commerce Committee for their support of this legislation. The courts have developed this new landlord and tenant mediation program to work through issues between landlords and tenants in an effort to avoid evictions. Currently, the housing vacancy rate in New Hampshire is less than 1%. Given that stark reality, any effort to keep people in their homes is a huge success. Mediation has been able to keep 80% of the tenants in the program in their homes. It’s also a chance to connect both tenants and landlords with supportive resources available to them. The goal of this program is to create win-win solutions that benefit all parties, and I greatly appreciation the Committee’s approval of this important legislation.”
