CONCORD – Today, in a party line vote of 14-10, Senate Republicans voted Ought to Pass on HB 282 which deletes the requirement that a private school be nonsectarian in order to be approved as a school tuition program.
After the vote, Senator Jay Kahn (D-Keene) issued the following statement:
“The basis of our democracy is the availability of a free and adequate education for every student. Today’s vote by my Republican colleagues to authorize public money to be spent on tuition payments to religious schools goes directly against the New Hampshire constitution. If the Republicans want to direct public money to religious schools they should do so through a constitutional amendment that allows the public to voice their opinion.”
