CONCORD – Today, Senate Republicans led an effort to reduce local control, thereby increasing property taxes, by passing HB 278, relative to the use of unused district facilities by chartered public schools.
After the vote, Senator Donna Soucy (D-Manchester), Senator Cindy Rosenwald (D-Nashua), and Senator Sue Prentiss (D- West Lebanon) issued the following statement:
“While we appreciate the effort of our colleagues to limit the power of HB 278, the fact remains that this language will limit a municipality’s control to sell their unused buildings. We know that our cities and towns are more than capable of finding a system that benefits both the municipality and the local educational needs, without raising local property taxes and we continue to be opposed to any action which shifts away that power.”
