CONCORD - Today, NH Senate Republicans removed the ability of municipalities, schools, and institutions of higher education to regulate firearms on their property. Senator Becky Whitley (D-Hopkinton) introduced an amendment to allow colleges and universities to regulate firearms on campus, and another floor amendment to allow K-12 schools to regulate weapons on school grounds. Both were rejected by all Senate Republicans majority.
After the vote, Senator Becky Whitley (D-Hopkinton) issued the following statement:
“I am deeply dismayed by the passage of this reckless legislation. It removes the ability of our schools and colleges to regulate weapons on school grounds and establishes steep penalties against any public body attempting to regulate weapons to keep their communities safe. This bill is designed to intimidate communities and school districts and eliminates local control. The safety and wellbeing of our children, in particular, should be of paramount importance to all of us. By arguing that the presence of more guns makes schools and communities safer, my Republican colleagues not only ignore public safety statistics and real-life lived experiences, they prioritize weapons over our children’s very lives.”
