CONCORD - Today, NH Senate Republicans passed HB 233, a bill which, as amended, will create a committee to study different ways to criminalize health care providers and limit the rights of grieving parents. This bill was brought forward on the baseless premise that infants are being left to die by medical professionals in New Hampshire. Not only is there no evidence of this happening anywhere in the state, it would already be illegal under existing homicide statutes.
After the vote, Senator Becky Whitley (D-Hopkinton) issued the following statement:
“There is absolutely no need for a committee to study this issue. This legislation perpetuates dangerous falsehoods about reproductive health care and New Hampshire’s medical professionals. The hearing for this bill was the most difficult and heartbreaking I’ve ever been through. As a mother, I was devastated listening to stories from brave parents on how this cruel bill would’ve impacted their families. There has been zero evidence presented that doctors are murdering infants in New Hampshire—a crime that is already illegal under existing statute. We did hear that this would take away rights of grieving parents by interfering with decisions made in the face of unthinkably tragic circumstances by requiring providers to perform invasive and futile procedures on infants. This bill is part of a dangerous false narrative and should have been found Inexpedient to Legislate. There’s nothing left to study here.”
