CONCORD – Today, the Senate passed SB 33, relative to Native American name restoration. This bill formalizes a process in the state for the appropriate naming or renaming of locations or geographic features in the Abenaki language.
After the vote, prime sponsor Senator David Watters (D-Dover) issued the following statement:
“Today’s vote represents a significant step toward us as a state acknowledging and truly appreciating the rich Native American history of New Hampshire. Here in the Granite State, one of the things we cherish most is our state’s beautiful landscape and geography. Today’s vote to create a formalized process for naming and renaming places and geographic features moves us closer to embracing the depth of our state’s history and roots.”
