CONCORD - Today, the Senate voted in favor of two bills addressing statewide concern over PFAS contamination in public drinking water. The first, SB 287 sponsored by Senator Tom Sherman (D-Rye), sets state PFAS maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) at the same levels recommended by the Department of Environmental Services in 2019. The second, SB 496 sponsored by Senator David Watters (D-Dover) sets up a fund for municipalities to help finance remediation projects in response to PFAS contamination in both drinking water and wastewater treatment.
After the vote, Senator Tom Sherman (D-Rye) and Senator David Watters (D-Dover) issued the following statement:
“As a Legislature, we remain committed to protecting safe drinking water, public safety, and our environment. The MCLs for PFAS contamination were set based on the latest science analyzed by the Department of Environmental Services and reported in 2019. Enacting and enforcing MCL limitations marks a step in the right direction toward ensuring the health and safety of all Granite Staters.”
Prime sponsor of SB 496, Senator David Watters (D-Dover) added “This bill takes a critical step in our fight against PFAS contamination in both our drinking water and our wastewater treatment. By allocating $50 million in credit from the state we are setting up a long term solution that helps alleviate the financial burden of remediation from our municipalities.”
