Democratic Leaders Respond to Speaker Jasper’s Letter

Concord, N.H. – Senate Democratic Leader Jeff Woodburn and House Democratic Leader Steve Shurtleff issued the following statement in response to Speaker Jasper’s letter:

“House and Senate Democrats stand firmly with Governor Hassan in opposition to the fiscally irresponsible Republican budget because we’re not willing to set up our state’s economy for failure by blowing a $90 million hole in future budgets at the expense of critical priorities for our people and businesses.”

“It’s impossible to take Speaker Jasper’s misleading letter seriously after his party tried to slash funding for crucial economic priorities including substance abuse and mental health treatment, maintaining our roads and bridges, and holding down the cost of higher education.”

“Unfortunately, the Speaker’s letter suggests that he does not intend to negotiate in good faith toward a fiscally responsible compromise to make sure that any corporate tax cuts are actually paid for and won’t undermine our state’s economic future.”

“Despite the fact that Speaker Jasper sent his members on vacation, Democrats in the Senate and House, along with the Governor, remain willing to immediately return to work to negotiate a fiscally responsible compromise budget that is actually balanced and meets the needs of our people, businesses and economy.”
